PH - AU Brawl Nobody's a Winner

***Disclaimer - Emotional and biased post

Last February I posted my thoughts regarding the Gilas away game against Australia for the FIBA World Cup 2019 Qualifiers held in Melbourne where I commended how good of a host they are in all basketball aspect.  Though we lost we were gallantly defeated by a proud obviously a more superior team.  And we took all of the lessons there and looked forward to the July 2 home game where we will host the Boomers on our home soil.  But all of the anticipation and excitement and the hype turned a very ugly turn as the now infamous basket brawl was witnessed by the world.  News of the unfortunate event spread like wildfire over the internet and over shadowed that day's biggest basketball news of Lebron James going to LA Lakers.

Everyone was shocked and disappointedWhat happened was wrong.  Who started it all at this moment does not matter - everybody lost here.  Too bad this issue is no way near reaching its end.  Social media war is still on going between Gilas and Boomers fans.  We have seen finger pointing among PH and AU team officials.  And too bad Filipinos versus FilipinosThis issue has once again exposes our glaring weakness as a nation - the issue of unity or the lack of it.  By now for sure you have seen the videos hundred of times already.  Memes about the brawl has flooded your news feeds some are amusing some are not.

Let's not talk about who hit who and who called names who anymore - we all know, heard and seen that already.  But instead I'd like our "video clip only viewers, headlines only readers, comments only reading then comment / posting netizens and Pinoy embarrassed of our fellow Pinoys" to know - We too are hurting, our boys has been hit too.  There are also family members of our players who were disappointed because their husband, brother, father and friend got involved with it.  And for sure will be facing sanctions - perhaps suspensions.  They will be the one to be fully affected - eh tayo, kayo maapektuhan ba as much that it will affect them?

You sympathize with the visitors - no big deal but do not ever completely see them as the sole victim of what you call "ugaling iskwater".  But I hope that as you sympathize with the Aussies let's not forget the name of the country on our Gilas boys' jerseys.

We are known to be gracious to our visitors, the Pinoy hospitality has its patent long before we are called Filipinos.  Proofs of that are the successful staging of international events like Ms. Universe Pageant, ASEAN Summit, and other big ticket events.  We've done so good that the organizers and heads of these organization has asked us to host them again.  FIBA too is a regular customer.  The hosting of  FIBA Asia Championship 2013, SEABA Championship 2017 and recently the FIBA World Cup 3X3 plus the awarding of the hosting rights of the 2023 FIBA World Cup are evidences that we meet exceed expectations.  In fact FIBA has commended Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas  and has made SBP a role model of hosting FIBA events.

And we'll stay that way.  But no matter how excellent of a host we are - there is a limitation to it.  If you think that our players' actions embarrassing - ask yourselves these metaphorical questions;

What would you do if your guest vandalize your home? Despite welcoming them and making them feel everything they see are theirs.

What would you feel if your guest calls you out because you stayed with them in the living room of your own home? Despite you allowing them to sit on your sofa while watching TV comfortably.

How would you react if during your guest' stay they were calling you names and laughing at you as if gloating about their superiority over you?

And then finally after all of these you see your son, unsuspectingly hit by one of your guest because he showed defiance to your humble visitors. - What do you think will happen next?

UPDATE: 2018 PBA All Star Games Logo Making Contest - A Case of Plagiarism?

DISQUALIFIED!

Winner of PBA All Star Logo contest has been disqualified by the panel of judges composed of league commissioner Willie Marcial, PBA legend Alvin Patrimonio and PBA Press Corps President Gerry N. Ramos.  The disqualification of the winner was announced Friday.  PBA has taken action after netizens noticed the clear similarities of the winning entries to the logo used by Playpark Philippines on one of their events.  Playpark Philippines has acknowledged PBA's swift action over the incident.

New winner will be chosen by the panel of judges and will be announced anytime soon.
____________________________________________________________________

PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial lead a panel of judges that chose the winner of the logo making contest for this year's All Star Games.  According to the report posted in PBA official website a part time photographer won the said contest.  "The entry which prominently displays the three stars symbolizing the Philippines' three island groups of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, emerged the winner in the first ever PBA All Star Sketch The Logo contest.", the report says.  The announcement was also made through PBA's offical Facebook page.

But it did not take long for some netizens to notice that resemblance of the winning logo to that of Playpark logo.  Playpark is an online gaming website that host tournaments for online gamers.  Netizens shared their comments that calls the winner out for copying the Playpark logo on his winning entry.  Check out the winning entry below and the Playpark logo and be the judge.

Check out too the comments posted by netizens.

Personally I like the logo being used now in PBA website, it looks regal and formal kind of fitting for stars.  I hope PBA get to sort things out here.  I do not judge the winner nor I claim myself clean from copying in fact some of my pictures on my blog are grabbed from different sources.  But we should not own it as ours always credit the owners as sign of respect and courtesy and professionalism.

Cheers!

In Support of Kobe Paras: Possible pro league he may play outside of NBA

Kobe Paras has declared his intentions to skip US NCAA and to go pro.  Weather it will be in the NBA or somewhere else is yet to be determined.  But as early as now let's list down some possible alternative (based on my point of view) over seas destination of our boy in the event that NBA won't be his immediate landing place.
LITHUANIAN BASKETBALL LEAGUE(Lietuvos krepÅ¡inio lyga/LBL/LKL)

Resulta ng larawan para sa lithuanian basketball league logoIf we think that there is no other country where basketball is a religion that's quite inaccurate as Serbia and well Lithuania are two basketball hotbeds in Europe.  And LBL(LKL) or Lithuanian Basketball League is one huge league in that part of the world. Most notable player to came from LBL is perhaps Zydrunas Ilgauskas who is the first player from LKL to reach the NBA as he was drafted 20th overall during the 1996 NBA Draft

Why is this a good landing place for the young Paras?  Well currently the Ball brothers are there playing for BC Vytautas.  Which means other teams may follow BC's act of getting another foreign player or players.  All it takes I think is a good PR act like the LaVar Ball approach for Kobe to get noticed by any teams from LKL.

ABA2000Logo.PNG
Considered a minor league in the main land US, current ABA is not related to the old American Basketball Association of the 70s which merged to NBA in 1976.  ABA does not have a regular season with loaded schedules of game like the NBA but can still be good for Kobe as a stepping stone for his NBA goals.  Kind of play here isn't that different from what Kobe is used to with him playing American type of hoops.  This isn't a big market league though but definitely can provide Paras a good workout and experience to his resume that can be used for future gigs.

Chinese Basketball Association.png
Now let's go somewhere quite near home.  Where else the Chinese Basketball Association.  We got a lot of players there with NBA pedigree and he got to play with some of our perennial Asian rivals.  And of course our current naturalized player Andray Blatche.  I heard pay there is good and so is the competition.   CBA is arguably the NBA of Asia with the level of talent, competition and money on the table is involved China is definitely a good professional destination for the young Kobe Paras

We're not including on this list PBA or ABL as those leagues I believe won't be able to give our boy the level of competition he needs in order for him to be a better player if he's eyeing an NBA slot.  That goes with out saying that PBA or ABL are bad, it's just that we're talking of a young boy who's dream is to be at the biggest stage of basketball in the world.  PBA and ABL will definitely open its arms wide in welcoming him but for sure they too would understand that with the amount of potential Kobe has he has to be unleashed and be allowed to play with the big boys.  After all it's for our country's gain in the future.

In closing, where ever Kobe goes he will enjoy the support of his nation and of course his family.  I also hope that we'll spare the boy unnecessary criticism.  It's his life it's his dream.  If at the end he fails it will be him who will feel bad the most so let's just support him after all his success will be this nation's accolades too.  Go Kobe, fly and soar high!

PBA Philippine Cup Semis: In the eyes of the Bashers and Haters

The 2018 PBA Philippine Cup semi-finals is about to kick off tomorrow with Baranggay Ginebra Kings going against its sister team and defending champion San Miguel Beermen.  While NLEX will play its first ever franchise semi final series versus Magnolia on Saturday.

There are subplots on this final four pairings that like, all 3 SMC Teams will be against the lone MVP team NLEXThere is also the drama between Kings and Beermen who were the last year's finalist, Beermen won that series. And of course the messianic arrival of the phenom Keifer Ravena to NLEX which as mentioned is about to go on their first ever final four appearanceAnd of course the face off of former mentor and apprentice in Yeng Guiao and Paul Lee as the Leathal Weapos stands in the way of his former coach in leading NLEX in the finals for the 1st time.

But of course there will be the conspiracy theories by the bashers and haters who will definitely flood your soc-med timeline before and after each games.  There will be lots of coaches and analyst wannabes who will lecture how things should have been done.  Well true hoops fans won't mind them.  But let's admit it sometimes it's really annoying that you'd like to reply to them and shove to their b**t the truth of their stupidity and make them realize that they are nothing but band wagoners who does not know the game the way a true fan should.

So before they feast, unahan na natin sila by listing down the top 10 (in no particular order) basher/hater's conspiracy theories for this Philippine Cup Semis;

1. Nakakaumay nang manunod ng PBA puro San Miguel Teams nalang ang nananalo.

2.  Kontralado ng SMC ang PBA kaya kita mo pabor na pabor sa kanila ang mga laban

3. If Ginebra wins the series - Sagip kapamilya nanaman

4. If Ginebra loses, inutusan yan ni long hair para champion parin ang Beermen

5. If Gin - SMB series goes the limit - pinahaba ng PBA yan para maraming pera

6. Kaya malakas ngayon ang NLEX kasi nakuha nila Kiefer at bago nila nakuha si Kiefer eh nagpalaglag sila sa standing last year

7. If NLEX loses the series with Magnolia - luto ni RSA

8. If NLEX wins, binayaran ni MVP ang mga refs

9. Papalunin ng PBA ang Ginebra at Magnolia para Manila Clasico ang finals

10. Bakit hindi nalang ibigay sa SMB ang trophy scripted naman yan

There you go, these are what I expect to be heard from some bashers and haters on whatever happens on the series.  But I'd say let's not pay that much attention to them.  Let's enjoy the semis and eventually the finals.  For the love of the game!

Tuesday PBA Action + Drama

It was an action packed Tuesday as far as the on going PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals are concerned.  Defending champs San Miguel Beermen oust the equally mighty TNT KaTropa while Magnolia came from Globalport Batang Pier's behind to be semis bound.  Both SMB and Magnolia enjoyed twice to beat advantages for ending on top of the standing after the grueling elimination round.  But fans did not only see basketball action.  Both on first and second game there were additional drama that took place.

First is Arwind Santos vs. Jasyon Castro and Jericho Cruz.  Early in the game Arwind Santos was called for a technical foul for unnecessarily pushing Jayson Castro during a dead play.  Santos reasoned out that he as pushed by Castro's teammate Troy Rosario which resulted to him bumping into Castro.  And then with less than a 2 minutes in the game, off a ball scramble which gave the Beermen a fastbreak play Arwind smacked right into Jericho Cruz.  This one was not taken lightly by Cruz this time as he gave Santos an elbow and if not for the cooler heads that stepped in, there might be more than shouting match that happened.  Cruz offered no remorse on the incident saying that Santos just got what he deserved.  Jericho further states that all game long Arwind was pushing and shoving Jayson, RR Pogoy and him.  I wonder how Arwind will react if it's Beau Belga, Calvin Abueva, Kelly Nabong or anyone as big as him or maybe bigger than him that he'll have some scuffle with.  Arwind to me has a reputation of bullying rookies like Kevin Ferrer and RR Pogoy.  But has he shown aggressiveness to men his size?

In the second game, Globalport Batang Pier looked to be on their way of an upset victory versus Magnolia as they lead as much as 20 points in the game.  Only to be defeated 86-79 by Magnolia.  At least couple of times in the game Magnolia main gunner Paul Lee gave his team a scare as he hurt his ankle on separate plays.  But the bigger drama was between Terrence Romeo and his coach Pido Jarencio.  While on a live play with Magnolia breathing on Global's neck towards the end of the 3rd, it was seen that Terrence and Coach Pido already was having some exchanges and when Magnolia finally overtook with a Mark Barroca three point shot, coach Pido called for time and the next thing seen was Romeo heading straight to Jarencio with some mouthfuls while the team staff tried to break them apart.  It was later seen in the footage during time out that Terrence and Jarencio continued to talk but team members and officials prevailed in pacifying the two.  Interestingly and ironically Kelly Nabong was one of those cooler heads that talked to Terrence to cool down.  It will be recalled that on their last game where Kelly Nabong was ejected for continuous complaining he was shoving his teammates and even coach Pido.  Later on it was reported that Nabong has apologizes to his team and to his coach and has vowed to keep his emotions checked all the times.

As it is playoff time now, we expect the action to pick up on every game.  The fans will love it.  It adds drama and color to the game.  It helps in making the viewers entertained.  But I hope that whatever extra action happens on the court stays on the court.

ABL All Stars Game: Pilipinas All Star vs. ASEAN All Star

Too bad San Miguel Alab Pilipinas lost to Westsport Malaysia Dragons halting Alab's hot 8 game winning streakJoshua Munzon the Fil-Am import of the Dragons split his late game charity shots but still enough to win the game for the home team.  Interestingly this is I think the 3rd time Alab has lost via the efforts of the opposing team's Fil-Am players.  First is the Christian Standhardinger lead Hongkong Eastern season opener game in MOA early this year, there is the game with Singapore Slingers where AJ Mandani lead his team.  And now this game where Alab fell victims to the hands of another Fil-Am Joshua Munzon.

This brings me the thought of what if the ABL puts up a Philippine vs. ASEAN kind of an All Star Game.  Similar to NBA's Rising Star Challenge which showcases the top rookies and sophomores from USA and the rest of the world.  That would be fun I am sure.  With the numbers of half-Pinoy half foreign players in ABL now we can form an all star team for sure, and in fact I have formed my own fantasy Philippine ABL All Stars.

THE STARTERS
This starting unit is going to be very explosive and efficient without our losing some swags.  With the current league leader in assist Jason Brickman (9.65 assist/game) manning the point with Joshua Munson and Bobby Ray Parks Jr. on the wing it will be problem for the opponents for sure.  Either Munzon or Parks Jr. wont hesitate to take their shots as they will have the able Lawrence Domingo and Christian Standhardinger protecting the front court.  We have already seen Bobby Ray and Christian played together in their Gilas stint so chemistry is not an issue either.  This lineup does not lack on shooting too with Munzon playing.  And of course the hassle and defense that Christian and Lawrence provide, this is definitely a dream team on their own rights.

THE RESERVES

If you're thinking that our would be ABL Philippines All Star's first 5 is all that've got, think again.  We have enough Fil-foreign players to compliment our starters.  Off the lists only Caelan Tiongson is the one that has not played in any local league here in our country.  But he's done enough to capture the attention of Coach Tim Cone as he commented that he thinks Tiongson can make an impact in the PBA.  While the rest are our usual local basketball mainstays either during their college days or even in their pro career.
It will be a lot of fun if this happens.  This will be a great tribute to the Philippines and another proof that we are ASEAN's basketball kings.  What do you think guys?  If this happens who do you think must coach the team, is Jimmy Alapag a shoo in?  Feel free to build your own ASEAN All Stars team too that will go against our home boys.

Philippines vs. Japan - Postscript

When things outside or on road are not good to you, you go home and make things better again.  This exactly what happened with Gilas Pilipinas as the home boys trounced the gallant Japanese at home last night.  But it was not an easy one, not at all.   The Japanese who we've been beating since 2009 did not fall with out swinging.  In fact it has given the host a scare when it blitzed to 20 - 4 lead half of the 1st quarter. And made a valiant last stand few seconds in the game.  The Mall of Asia Arena crowd was eerily silent already thinking of a home town defeat at the hands of the visiting Akatsuki Five.

But thanks to the efforts of youngsters Kiefer Ravena and Troy Rosario whose tandem had literally picked Gilas from slump to just a point deficit at the end of first quarter.  It also helped that Calvin Abueva as always have been the source of contagious energy for the squad.  Time of redemption too for our naturalized big man Andray Blatche as he made the home crowd witness to his best game so far in the on going FIBA World Cup qualifers.  And also as fairy tale'ish as it may seem, the Blur Jason Castro William has saved the best for last anew pouring bucket of ice to Japan's moral by his running off the board shot that sealed the win for us.

Photos from FIBA

But what appears to be the X factor is the tremendous crowd support.  As early as 4PM it was reported that queue out side the arena is already long as fans were prepping for the game. I'd say that fans' reactions last night was louder and more alive compared to 2016's Olympic Qualifying tournament where there were noticeable gaps in cheering for our boys.  And last night was different.  I hope we'll be as boisterous as this when we host the Boomers in July - or maybe even more.  Imagine a jam packed Philippine Arena cheering and shouting for Gilas.  Wow! that's a sight to behold.  This win practically pushes us to the next round where we'll play along with the other top 3 teams on the other group. But we still have 2 games left in the 3rd window, we play at Chinese Taipe on June 29 and then we host the Boomers on July 2

On the other hand, I kind of feel bad for Japan.  As mentioned they have not beaten us in several years now in major Asian tournaments.  Knowing how bad it is being on the losing end makes me understand how they must be feeling.  I also feel for their coach Julio Llamas.  But that's how the ball rolls.  For sure they will be back better and they will continue to be a threat our team.

For now I'd love to enjoy the feeling of victory even temporarily.  I hope that when our team re-convene sometime in May or June it will have less drama, no injury and more Puso!
